When we hear the term mixed martial arts these days most of us would think about the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Challenge), or PRIDE Fighting championships from Japan, or other sport fighting that we see on T.V.. However, people have been combining various martial arts together since the beginning of the martial arts. The fact is that mixing martial arts together isnt new at all, its just the creation of a new sport that is different from past mixed martial arts.

Modern mixed martial arts consist of three ranges of fighting, and subsequently three basic types of skills that are necessary to compete in that arena; kickboxing, throwing and wrestling, and grappling submissions.  Muay Thai kickboxing from Thailand, Judo and wrestling throwing techniques, and Brazilian Jujitsu submissions are the three main styles employed in the modern MMA.  Of  course, there are many people of various martial arts backgrounds that utilize other arts as well, but those three arts are the prevalent ones seen today.

The Kodenkan Yudanshakai has a long history of blending styles together to create more thorough combat systems.  Daishihan Joseph Holck, along with 4 other instructors, founded Kajukenbo and that system consisted of striking, throwing and grappling arts much like we see in the MMA.  This style is still practiced widely today.  Matsuno Ryu Goshinjitsu is also a mixed martial art that utilizes striking, throwing and grappling techniques with the emphasis being on self-defense applications.  Furthermore, three Kodenkan Yudanshakai instructors founded Hiraido Jujitsu in 2001, bringing the modern mixed martial arts to our organization.

Hiraido Jujitsu is comprised of kickboxing, Judo, wrestling, and submission grappling techniques, and was inspired by modern mixed fighting competitions we see today.  It has been repeatedly demonstrated in these competitions that a balanced set of skills is essential to survival in a real fight.  The use of safety gear enables us to practice and spar with safety and control, while also allowing us to apply the techniques in a realistic setting.  Sensei Mark Cann, Shihan John McGraugh and O Sensei Elliott Lyle are the three instructors who pooled their collective martial arts experiences together to form this mixed martial art .  Whether you are looking to compete, learn self-defense or just get a good hard workout, come and join us and youll get a better idea of how the mixed martial arts are practiced today!
